A Florida boba shop turns a pandemic idea into a lean, efficient operation — one tap at a time.
Yami opened Boba & Berry in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, turning a quiet stretch of time into an opportunity to build something. From the beginning, the shop's workflow had a bottleneck: even on slow days, it took two people to run — one to take orders manually, another to prepare them. If a single employee was on shift, one slow customer or a complicated order could bring everything to a halt.
"Even if it was slow and you only had one person, I found it very difficult. Sometimes it was just one customer with a long order, or they take a long time to decide what they want — and you're just waiting."
After connecting with Weston at Flash Order, Yami got a full walkthrough of the kiosk system and immediately saw the potential. The setup lets customers walk in, tap the screen, and place their own order — at whatever pace they need — while Yami stays focused on preparing the previous ticket.
Orders print directly to her terminal, she posts the ticket, and customers pick up on the other side. The only exception is cash payments, which still require manual handling — but the vast majority of customers pay by credit card, Apple Pay, or Cash App.
"It pretty much takes over one employee. People walk in, they tap on the screen, they place their order, and they can take as long as they want — without me wasting time on the previous order."
The kiosk has been a hit across all ages. Families with young children get excited — kids treat it like a video game. Younger customers take to it immediately. Even older customers who are initially hesitant tend to come around quickly, and by their second visit they already know what to do.
"Maybe 1% of people feel intimidated and would rather I take their order — which I'm happy to do. But it comes with a price tag: they're going to have to wait."
"You don't even think about it. It's a no-brainer. Unless you want to work double — just make it easy. I don't even have the need to shop around for another point-of-sale system, because it just works."
